NAVTEQ Integrates Data from the State of Arkansas to Create Fresh, Accurate and Reliable Map Updates

An up-to-date map is essential for obtaining the best route, a reliable detour, the closest gas station or the nearest hospital. At NAVTEQ, we maintain a fresh, reliable map by staying ahead of change, and by quickly responding to it. As part of our ongoing maintenance program in Arkansas, NAVTEQ has developed a strategic relationship with the Arkansas Geographic Information Office to improve the NAVTEQ® map update process.

NAVTEQ uses the Arkansas Centerline File which is a digital representation of the road centerlines across the state. The file is locally developed and maintained in the counties and then each county file is integrated into a statewide database by the Arkansas Geographic Information Office. The County 9-1-1 offices are primary contributors to the centerline data so the quality of street names and addresses are assured to be high. In addition, the NAVTEQ Digital Mapping Operations teams tests the quality of the data prior to using it in their collection or production efforts.

NAVTEQ specifically uses the GIS data as a base layer, allowing for focus on the field collection of additional attributes in order to meet NAVTEQ’s high quality specification for navigation. The integration of the base data accelerates the map maintenance process in remote (inter-town) areas in Arkansas. Also, NAVTEQ has completed the expansion of Faulkner and Saline counties to “prime”*coverage level. End users will be able to travel confidently to their destination because their internet mapping portals, mobile phone applications and navigation devices are equipped with an up-to-date NAVTEQ® map. Business users will also gain business efficiencies by having the latest map via enterprise products that use NAVTEQ data such as the NAVTEQ Transport product for truck routing.

*Prime Coverage: NAVTEQ’s highest level of coverage where the entire road network, including all major and minor residential streets, is verified.

NAVTEQ Expands Collaboration with State and Local Governments

NAVTEQ continues to expand an initiative to work with state and local governments to achieve faster collection and dissemination of high quality mapping content to the everyday users of location technology. From the route-planning of internet websites to the real-time guidance of personal navigation devices, all types of applications can benefit from this collaboration. NAVTEQ has developed a customizable approach to accommodating individual state requirements that can be used easily and effectively by governments.

As the country’s population increases, governments are emphasizing the need for accurate data and content. Governments build maps for the purpose of maintaining and managing resources and assets, which requires precise locating, positioning, and routing. This collaboration is a combined investment in quality mapping that will raise the level of productivity in GIS applications. By working directly with the states, NAVTEQ is able to provide these key benefits to users of map data for GIS:

  • Access to routable, networked data sets for routing and transportation management
  • A unified framework across states for a consistent and accurate base map throughout the entire region
  • An easy way for governments to provide updated public data to constituents quickly and easily
  • Reduction in government costs of integrating multiple data sources into one database
  • Consistent nationwide database for use across cities, counties, and states to help local governments plan for both large- and small-scale situations
NAVTEQ works with states to incorporate content from local GIS departments into the NAVTEQ map, including e911 addressing, parcel points, and many more of the 260 data attributes collected for the NAVTEQ map. States typically license the NAVTEQ map for all government agencies in the state. NAVTEQ engages its vast local resources to validate the government data and integrate it into the NAVTEQ map. The map is then distributed back to the state for GIS use, and to millions of NAVTEQ map users across the country. The states benefit from the conflation and verification that NAVTEQ provides as well as from the distribution of their data to users though navigation devices, internet portals, and other location-enabled applications.
