The NAVTEQ Map

NAVTEQ is the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data that enables navigation and location-based platforms around the world.

The company has built one of the most robust and accurate geographic databases in the world.

  • Virtually every major automobile manufacturer currently offering a navigation system in North America and Europe uses NAVTEQ® maps in one or more of their models.
  • NAVTEQ maps power major internet mapping portals in North America and Europe.
  • The leading global wireless brand chooses NAVTEQ maps to help power their location-enabled devices.
  • Foremost PND manufacturers in the world choose NAVTEQ.
  • NAVTEQ Traffic™ is the only end-to-end, integrated traffic information solution that spans data gathering to direct-to-consumer delivery.

On average, there are more than 100 million uses of NAVTEQ map every day across in-dash, portable, Internet and enterprise applications.

NAVTEQ pioneered the development and maintenance of high-quality automotive-grade maps for turn-by-turn navigation.  Our unrivaled processes and infrastructure have established NAVTEQ maps as the quality benchmark for the industry.

NAVTEQ’s exacting process for map management helps us build a map database that is accurate today, and enables us to maintain that accuracy as the world changes. We begin with superior in-field collection and validation. From regional offices scattered across the globe, more than 1,000 NAVTEQ geographic analysts use local knowledge and local contacts to collect and verify the details of the roads in their neighborhoods. These geographic analysts drive and redrive millions of kilometers each year.

The NAVTEQ database specification includes up to 260 data attributes that affect navigation such as access restrictions, one-way streets and speed categories that help optimize navigation.  To help NAVTEQ geographic analysts constantly improve and maintain the level of quality they can deliver, we regularly develop additions to the tools they use.

Among the recent additions:

  • Multiview camera video systems that provide an archived permanent record of the analysts’ notes along with the video, which enables the capture of detailed content for follow-up analysis
  • Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) that aid collection in areas where GPS signals are unreliable

Our map also features millions of points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, hospitals, fuel stations, shopping centers and sports arenas. By offering so many destinations to find, and accurately routing to them, we offer a rich, rewarding navigation experience and an exceptional platform for developing location based services.

By offering detailed road information in the full range of road geometry classifications, the NAVTEQ digital map database is not only reliable and accurate, it’s flexible and usable whatever the application.

NAVTEQ production facilities in North America, Mexico, Eastern Europe and India transform data received from field teams and other sources into the NAVTEQ® map. At every stage of production, NAVTEQ personnel use a meticulous, intelligent source evaluation program that:

  • Evaluates each source of information based on our high quality standards.
  • Edits data with proprietary tools that identify and resolve discrepancies between information provided by sources and real-world conditions.
  • Formats data using a patented process that helps maintain accuracy and consistency.

In addition, we can apply more than 1,100 in-line validation rules, correcting errors in real-time and maximizing accuracy.

NAVTEQ’s Quality, Update and Evaluating Sampling Tools (QUEST) program evaluates the NAVTEQ map against a sample of field collected data to determine which features are viable and to identify problem areas that may require further evaluation. Our QUEST program is the type of focused ground-truth testing at which NAVTEQ excels. It is certified by CERTECS as a Standard for Testing to Ground Truth Reality. We perform hundreds of QUEST tests a year across all regions, providing us with a valid statistical and replicable sampling of the map. And we complete our testing model with functionality tests that evaluate how the NAVTEQ map performs in a real system. All are part of our commitment to constantly improve the quality of the NAVTEQ map.

At NAVTEQ, we maintain a fresh, reliable map by staying ahead of change, and by quickly responding to it. The NAVTEQ field offices, local governments, field-collected video data, sign manufacturers and address guides keep us on top of changes as they occur. And we tap the knowledge of expert communities, including users through NAVTEQ Map Reporter™, an online map-based update portal, fleet customers and NAVTEQ Direct Access™—a program through which merchants can work directly with us to make sure their locations are precisely positioned on our map—to check and verify changes as they happen. NAVTEQ also continues to develop and expand use of data from probe devices and vehicles—tools that can give us information about traffic and road conditions in real-time—in order to stay ahead of change in our fast-moving world.

Every day, we work to make our map even more accurate, rich, reliable and useful to the growing number of people who depend on it. By continuously expanding our coverage and product offerings, and by innovating with exciting new ideas and services, we are staying ahead of the curve. We are guiding companies and consumers, developers and end users toward an exciting new world.
