About NAVTEQ Map Reporter™

What is the NAVTEQ Map Reporter?

NAVTEQ identifies changes to the road network through a variety of more than 80,000 sources – including the local knowledge of our field force and input from the more than 100 million uses of NAVTEQ maps everyday. Once a change is identified, we verify the accuracy of the information before adding it to our database – this is the key differentiation for the quality of NAVTEQ maps. Once a change to the road network is fully verified, it is included in the next quarterly NAVTEQ database release.

Community-generated data has become an increasingly important factor for maintaining the accuracy of the location data found in an application. A large determinant of a user’s experience on a device is the quality of the map data. NAVTEQ Map Reporter, a community based online tool for suggesting changes to the NAVTEQ map, is a valued component for keeping the NAVTEQ map fresh and consistent with the real world. This map-based interface allows consumers to pinpoint the location of the places that are important to them. Our online Map Reporter tool enables NAVTEQ to get clear and timely feedback from the people who use our maps. Once NAVTEQ receives the suggestion, each report is verified. NAVTEQ investigates each map report in to identify needed changes to the NAVTEQ map. Legitimate discrepancies are then corrected in the database. The updated data is then provided to our customers in the next quarterly map release so that they have access to the highest quality data possible.

NOTE: Many Map Reporter submissions prove to be about locations we already have in our map, but are not in the version of the map the consumer is using.

The system is accessible at www.mapreporter.com.

Implementing a map feedback channel is fast and easy. By using online marker tools to interact with the NAVTEQ map, users can pinpoint an exact location on the map and suggest updates or corrections.

  • Map Reporter guides its users through a five-step process for submitting feedback, while further instructions appear in pop-up boxes on-screen
  • Consumers choose from a list of feedback options, including: Address, Road and Road Feature, Point of Interest (POI), Traffic Restriction and other

What needs to be included in a map report?

A standard map report needs to include the exact location on where the change occurs. Depending on the application and integration channel, this can be done by searching and marking with an interactive mapping component or by a device with a built-in GPS component reporting the location.
Specific fields may be required for each category and brief description of the change request may also be necessary. The following feedback types are currently included:

  • Address
  • Road or road feature
  • Point of Interest (POI)
  • Traffic Restrictions
  • "Others" for all types not fitting these categories.

In addition, attachments, such as images or supporting evidence can be added to the submission, as well as details on the navigation system/application that has been used and an email address to receive the tracking number and status updates.

NAVTEQ has created a structured change description vocabulary that allows a direct matching of the submitted details against our map database. For details on the change vocabulary and detailed description of the data required for the different feedback types, please see the technical API description.
