Opportunities for Digital Map Enhancement of ADAS Applications

NAVTEQ, as well as the automotive industry at large, have long recognized that digital maps can play a role as a “sensor” that, when combined with other sensor inputs, can enable or support ADAS in a variety of value-adding ways.  To illustrate, road slope information from the NAVTEQ Map can inform a vehicle about upcoming hills and support adjustments to the engine throttle accordingly. This ‘Predictive Cruise Control’ application is an example of how maps can enable fuel savings within ADAS.

Numerous other possibilities exist for digital map data to enhanced or enabled ADAS applications, including:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Change and Lane Keeping Assistant
  • Curve Warning System
  • Drowsy Driver Detection
  • Forward and Side Collision Warning
  • Intelligent Speed Advisory
  • Black Spot Warning
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Overtake Assistant
  • Powertrain Control / Fuel Economy
  • Adaptive Frontlight Systems
  • Stop Light and Stop Sign Warning

ADAS Application Basic Function Digital Map Enhancement Example
Adaptive Cruise Control Maintain set following distance behind a lead vehicle. Map data enables more natural behavior.
Adaptive Frontlight System Swiveling and leveling headlamps Map curvature and slope data enables predictive ability.
Blind Spot Detection Identify difficult to see objects near vehicle. Lane information improves threat discrimination.
Curve Warning Alert driver to a sharp curve ahead or safe approach speed. Road curvature data enables predictive ability.
Drowsy Driver Detection Warn driver when lethargic, intoxicated or otherwise impaired. Map data identifies driving not consistent with road shape.
Electronic Stability Control Stabilize vehicle during severe understeer or oversteer. Map data improves intended path determination.
Forward/Side Collision Warning Identify and respond to vehicles which pose a threat. Road trajectory and lane information improve threat discrimination.
Green Driving Enhance routing for reduced fuel consumption. Road slope, traffic sign and signal location enable predictive energy used.
Lane Departure Warning Alert driver when vehicle exceeds the lane. Road shape data improves performance of imaging system.
Lane Keeping Assistant Maintain vehicle within driving lane. Road shape data improves performance of imaging system.
Lane Change Assistant Warn of vehicles in proximity during lane change. Lane information improves threat discrimination.
Overtake Assistant Identify locations for safe passing. Digital map includes dedicated overtaking zone locations.
Powertrain  Efficiency Reduced fuel consumption and emissions. Road slope data enables predictive powertrain functions.
Speed Advisory Inform driver of speed limit or excessive speed. Map provides legal and advisory speed limits.
Stoplight and Stop Sign Warning Alert driver to approaching traffic light or stop sign. Map provides traffic signal and sign locations.
